From Isolation to Innovation: Data Lake and Melco Foundation Transform 100 Remote Schools into Digital Hubs

MANILA, Philippines —In a strategic alliance with the Melco Resorts (Philippines) Foundation Corporation and the Department of Education (DepEd), has successfully completed the “100 Schools Project,” creating a high-speed digital lifeline for thousands of students who were once cut off from the global conversation.
This initiative goes beyond simple connectivity; it is a masterclass in technical logistics and community empowerment, proving that with the right partnership, even the “last mile” is within reach.
THE HUMAN STORY: BRIDGING THE DIVIDE
For years, educators like Mr. Jessie Guyang, Principal of Tulgao West Integrated School in Kalinga, operated in a digital vacuum. “Before, we were disconnected,” Guyang shares. “Now, we are part of the DepEd digital world.
“These are not isolated anecdotes. They represent a verified “Journey Arc” documented by Data Lake’s impact assessment. Prior to this project, frustration with connectivity was the norm. Today, post-implementation data reveals a 93.4% satisfaction rate among teachers, with 88.7% reporting immediate access to essential online teaching tools and webinars that were previously impossible to load.
ENGINEERING RESILIENCE: THE “PISA SPRINT”
The true test of this partnership’s technical capability came during the preparations for the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). The mandate was clear but daunting: activate high-performance connectivity for 39 geographically dispersed sites in just 17 days.
Data Lake mobilized multiple field engineering teams to navigate unpredictable weather and complex island logistics. The result was a 100% successful deployment that allowed schools to run large-scale digital assessments seamlessly.
“The first thing we were able to do was connect more than 50 laptops simultaneously for our PISA preparation,” noted Michael Dejos, ICT Coordinator at Bantayan National High School in Cebu. “This new Starlink connection which allows us to run large-scale digital activities smoothly.”
TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE & NETWORK ARCHITECTURE
Unlike standard residential setups, these schools were equipped with enterprise-grade infrastructure designed for heavy user loads. The deployment included Starlink High-Performance Kits paired with TP-Link Omada Gigabit VPN Routers and Outdoor Access Points, ensuring that the bandwidth clocking speeds up to 295 Mbps, effectively distributed across entire school campuses.
Demonstrating a commitment to long-term utility, Data Lake also executed 9 strategic site relocations during the project phase, moving equipment from dormant sites to active schools to ensure no resource went to waste, a move that underscores the project’s focus on audit-grade efficiency.
COMMUNITY IMPACT: SCHOOLS AS DIGITAL ANCHORS
The impact of this connectivity spills beyond the classroom walls. In many of these remote barangays, the school has become a community digital hub.
“It is a huge help especially for urgent communications with parents,” says Imelda Villadarez of Cabayunan Elementary School in Bulacan. “We are able to stay updated on the happenings in the community.”
By turning schools into connectivity anchors, the Melco-Data Lake partnership has strengthened local resilience, enabling real-time communication during disasters and allowing remote communities to participate in the national digital economy.
A MODEL FOR NATION-BUILDING
This project serves as a blueprint for effective Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The Melco Foundation did not simply write a check; they demanded a sustainable, high-impact solution that would survive the challenges of the Philippine landscape.
“By combining their resources with Data Lake’s engineering precision, we have proven that geography is no longer a barrier to quality education.”
